Sending away someone who was part of your household

Genesis Bible Background

Old Testament: Gen 21.14

To read the Bible in a year, read Genesis 20–22 on January 8, In the year of our Lord Christ 2020

By Don Ruhl

Sarah wanted Abraham to cast out of their household, Hagar and her son. Abraham was not happy about that, after all Hagar’s son was also Abraham’s son. However, the Lord spoke to Abraham, telling him not to be displeased but to do as Sarah had said, and the Lord explained why. Abraham then did as he had been told:

So Abraham rose early in the morning, and took bread and a skin of water; and putting it on her shoulder, he gave it and the boy to Hagar, and sent her away. Then she departed and wandered in the Wilderness of Beersheba.

– Genesis 21.14

That must have been hard for Abraham, yet, the Lord had promised to make of Ishmael a great nation. Therefore, Abraham could do this because he knew that the Lord would take care of Hagar and her son Ishmael!
