New Testament: Mark 8.17–18
To read the Bible in a year, read Mark 8.1–21 on February 29, In the year of our Lord Christ 2020
By Don Ruhl
Jesus warned His disciples about the leaven of the Pharisees and of Herod, and they thought that Jesus referred to bread, but He referred to the teachings and the ways of the Pharisees and of Herod. Knowing that they did not understand, Mark wrote this for us:
But Jesus, being aware of it, said to them, “Why do you reason because you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive nor understand? Is your heart still hardened? Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear? And do you not remember?”
– Mark 8.17–18
He wanted them to know that they would always have bread, but that His warning had nothing to do with their food, rather He warned them of how the influence of the Pharisees and of Herod could be like leaven, starting out small and then growing and taking over.
Consider His questions for your life in general.
- Do you understand the teachings of Jesus?
- Is your heart hardened?
- Do you see the point of His teachings?
- Do you hear what He seeks to teach you?
- Do you remember His teachings?
