New Testament: John 1.48–49
To read the Bible in a year, read John 1.29–51 on May 8, In the year of our Lord Christ 2020
By Don Ruhl
As one of the apostles approached Jesus, Jesus said something to him that surprised him:
Nathanael said to Him, “How do You know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” Nathanael answered and said to Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”
– John 1.48–49
Nathanael had been alone evidently. Yet, Jesus identified where he had been before Philip called him to go see Jesus. Jesus even knew that Philip had called Nathanael.
Nathanael knew that the only way Jesus could have known these things is that He had seen Nathanael, although Nathanael had not seen Jesus there, showing that Jesus had to be the Son of God, which meant that He was the King of Israel.
Questions:
- Do you think about the fact that Jesus sees you right now?
- Do you find that to be a comforting thought or a terrifying thought?
