Old Testament: Jer 28.10–11
To read the Bible in a year, read Jeremiah 27–28 on October 30, In the year of our Lord Christ 2020
By Don Ruhl
Jeremiah had prophesied that the Babylonian captivity would last 70 years, but another prophet indicated that it would be much shorter. Jeremiah objected. The other prophet then did a sign:
Then Hananiah the prophet took the yoke off the prophet Jeremiah’s neck and broke it. And Hananiah spoke in the presence of all the people, saying, “Thus says the LORD: ‘Even so I will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon from the neck of all nations within the space of two full years.’” And the prophet Jeremiah went his way.
– Jeremiah 28.10–11
Jeremiah did the only thing that he could do at that moment: He just walked away. Earlier in the text you will see that he was hoping that Hananiah was right, but Jeremiah found out later that Hananiah was wrong.
