The Babylonians had crushed and destroyed the beloved city of Jerusalem. Picture in your mind what that must have looked like. Then see Jeremiah the prophet shaken, eyes filled with tears, and the saddest face you have ever seen. Hear him speaking these words:
“See, O LORD, that I am in distress; my soul is troubled; my heart is overturned within me, for I have been very rebellious. Outside the sword bereaves, at home it is like death.”
– Lamentations 1.20
Yet, in that horror through which the prophet lived, he set his eyes on the Lord. That is what Judah and Jerusalem should have done. They did not survive, but Jeremiah did survive because he set his eyes upon the Lord. He spoke to the Lord of the horrors that he had experienced.
