The victory that comes from faith

New Testament: Heb 11.33–35a

To read the Bible in a year, read Hebrews 11.20–40 on November 16, In the year of our Lord Christ 2020

By Don Ruhl

The writer of the Book of Hebrews listed many heroes of the faith that we find in the Old Testament and reminded us of their victories. Then he just listed some names without going into their stories and then he listed victories of those saints and others that he did not name:

…who through faith subdued kingdoms, worked righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, became valiant in battle, turned to flight the armies of the aliens. Women received their dead raised to life again.

– Hebrews 11.33–35a

Truly faith overcomes the world! Yet, as the writer continued he listed how others suffered for their faith. So, following the Lord Jesus by faith in life may bring victory or it may bring suffering, but either way, living by faith means that we will follow Him wherever He leads us.

Questions:

  • How has your life of faith been going?
  • Do you see how sometimes you have a victory by faith and at others affliction because of your faith?
