New Testament: Matt 3.7–9
To read the Bible in a year, read Matthew 3 on January 3, In the year of our Lord Christ 2021
By Don Ruhl
John the Baptist preached powerfully, so much so that the Pharisees and Sadducees began to wonder whether he was the Christ. Therefore, they went out to listen to him preach, but listen to what he said to them:
But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, “Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance, and do not think to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones.”
– Matthew 3.7–9
Wow, what preaching! He let them know that wrath was headed their way, but if they wanted to avoid that wrath, they had to repent and to show that they had repented. They could not claim that having Abraham as their father in the flesh would save them, because it is how we live that God wants to see.
Questions:
- Are you bearing fruits of repentance?
- Do you put more stock into your family or into God’s family?

One thing (amongst a few others) is for sure – if ole’ John wrote a book today, with his habit of telling people about their need for repentance, it wouldn’t be a best seller.
