Old Testament: Gen 30.9–13
To read the Bible in a year, read Genesis 29–30 on January 12, In the year of our Lord Christ 2021

We read of Leah and Rachel’s competition for Jacob’s love and acceptance, and find it hard to understand, but I wonder if we practiced polygamy today, whether the same thing could happen. Both women loved Jacob and wanted him to love them. Anyway, watch how Leah became desperate to have children for Jacob:
When Leah saw that she had stopped bearing, she took Zilpah her maid and gave her to Jacob as wife. And Leah’s maid Zilpah bore Jacob a son. Then Leah said, “A troop comes!” So she called his name Gad. And Leah’s maid Zilpah bore Jacob a second son. Then Leah said, “I am happy, for the daughters will call me blessed.” So she called his name Asher.
– Genesis 30.9–13
In this manner, what would become the tribes of Israel began, and it all began as a competition for love and acceptance.
Are you not glad that we do not have to compete for God’s love and acceptance of us, but He accepts us all the same? Praise God.
- How do you know that God loves you and has accepted you?
- How do you show your love for God?
