New Testament: Matt 15.3–4
To read the Bible in a year, read Matthew 15.1–20 on January 21, In the year of our Lord Christ 2021
By Don Ruhl
The scribes and Pharisees accused Jesus of breaking the tradition of the elders, but He countered that they broke the commandment of God. As proof of that, Jesus quoted the Law on how they were to treat their parents. As I quote Jesus, please notice what He said the penalty for failing to honor parents was:
He answered and said to them, “Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition? For God commanded, saying, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’”
– Matthew 15.3–4
For children old enough to know better, the Law of Moses stipulated that the penalty for cursing one’s father or mother was death!
So then what does God think of parents? He thinks very highly of them, for He is one Himself.
Questions:
- How have you treated your parents?
- What are ways to honor parents?
