Old Testament: Exo 5.1–3
To read the Bible in a year, read Exodus 4–6 on January 23, In the year of our Lord Christ 2021
By Don Ruhl
Moses did as Jehovah God told him to do and he went to Pharaoh and asked the king of Egypt to let Israel go that they might sacrifice to their God in the wilderness. Listen to the exchange between Moses and Pharaoh:
Afterward Moses and Aaron went in and told Pharaoh, “Thus says the LORD God of Israel: Let My people go, that they may hold a feast to Me in the wilderness.” And Pharaoh said, “Who is the LORD, that I should obey His voice to let Israel go? I do not know the LORD, nor will I let Israel go.” So they said, “The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Please, let us go three days’ journey into the desert and sacrifice to the LORD our God, lest He fall upon us with pestilence or with the sword.”
– Exodus 5.1–3
We all need to know who the God of the Hebrews is that we may obey Him, but Pharaoh was not asking to know the Lord. He challenged the Lord and he challenged Moses and Aaron. Pharaoh thought he was above the God of Israel. Whether Pharaoh wanted to know the Lord or not, the king got a brutal ten-lesson course in the God of Israel, and Pharaoh and his land suffered a massive economic failure in the process.
