Old Testament: Num 21.27–30
To read the Bible in a year, read Numbers 21–22 on February 28, In the year of our Lord Christ 2021
By Don Ruhl
Sihon, king of the Amorites, fought Israel, but Israel defeated him and his army with the result that they became a proverb, which in this case was not a good thing:
Therefore those who speak in proverbs say:
“Come to Heshbon, let it be built;
Let the city of Sihon be repaired.
For fire went out from Heshbon,
A flame from the city of Sihon;
It consumed Ar of Moab,
The lords of the heights of the Arnon.
Woe to you, Moab!
You have perished, O people of Chemosh!
He has given his sons as fugitives,
And his daughters into captivity,
To Sihon king of the Amorites.
But we have shot at them;
Heshbon has perished as far as Dibon.
Then we laid waste as far as Nophah,
Which reaches to Medeba.”
– Numbers 21.27–30
The Amorites became a lesson on what happens when you fight God’s people, whether it was Israel in the past or the church now. Do not fight the people of the God of heaven, because, in the long term, you will not win. You may win one battle but it will only be because He needed to teach His people a lesson, and then He will defeat their enemies once His people have learned what He wanted them to learn.
Questions:
- From where did fire come?
- How far did Heshbon perish?
