New Testament: Mark 9.28–29
To read the Bible in a year, read Mark 9.1–29 on March 2, In the year of our Lord Christ 2021
By Don Ruhl
The disciples could not cast an unclean spirit out of a boy, and it troubled them that they could not do it. They asked Jesus about it and he revealed what extra step that they needed to do:
And when He had come into the house, His disciples asked Him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?” So He said to them, “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting.”
– Mark 9.28–29
Not all translations have “fasting,” but both the Old and New King James Versions do. Evidently when the disciples cast unclean spirits out of people, they just simply did it in the name of Jesus, but some cases arose where they needed to pray about it also.
Undoubtedly the disciples were devoted to prayer, but this one just needed extra prayer, so that the power was still of God. Perhaps they needed to be reminded that the God of heaven is the power and not themselves.
- For what things have you needed to make extra prayer?
- How often do you pray?
