New Testament: Luke 9.59–60
To read the Bible in a year, read Luke 9.37–62 on April 4, In the year of our Lord Christ 2021
By Don Ruhl
The people liked Jesus, and some told Him that they wanted to follow Him. To others whom He found, He told them to follow Him:
Then He said to another, “Follow Me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and preach the kingdom of God.”
– Luke 9.59–60
Our first response tends to be on what Jesus said to this person. To us, it seems harsh. However, He was jolting this man awake, teaching him that no one, regardless of their life issues, puts a condition upon following Him.
Questions:
- What did Jesus want this person to do after telling him to follow Him?
- Have you put conditions on following Christ?

The old human tendency, is it not? I have no claim on him, only he on me.

So true. I think we see it all throughout the Bible.

Whats sad is, we all put conditions on following Christ, afraid we’re going to lose something. The truth is, we have everything to gain.
