Where does the strength of God’s people lie?

Old Testament: 2Sa 24.1

To read the Bible in a year, read Second Samuel 23–24 on April 30, In the year of our Lord Christ 2021

By Don Ruhl

Israel did something against the Lord, but what it was, we do not know. God then had David number Israel and Judah, but David was doing it to see how strong he was, and by doing that, he was relying upon his military strength rather than the Lord:

Again the anger of the LORD was aroused against Israel, and He moved David against them to say, “Go, number Israel and Judah.”

– 2 Samuel 24.1

So David ordered Joab to take this numbering, but Joab disagreed strongly with what David was doing, nevertheless, the word of David prevailed over his nephew and Joab did as told, although he did not complete the job.

For this the Lord took the lives of 70,000 of the Israelites, and also because Israel had sinned. In three days, Israel experienced that loss of life, showing that their strength did not lie in their numbers, but in the Lord.

  • What is your strength?
  • Why were Isarel and Judah counted separately?
