David either organized or ordered the organization of the worship at the tabernacle, which would also later be conducted in the temple that Solomon would build. Concerning the priests, Ezra noted:

These also cast lots just as their brothers the sons of Aaron did, in the presence of King David, Zadok, Ahimelech, and the heads of the fathers’ houses of the priests and Levites. The chief fathers did just as their younger brethren.

– 1 Chronicles 24.31

While David could not do everything himself, and he expected others to do what he had assigned them to do, it was also the case that some matters were of such importance that they needed to be done in his presence. He was the king of Israel. He just needed to be present for some jobs.

Moreover, nothing was more important to David during any time of his life, regardless of the situation, then the worship of God Almighty.
