Is there hope for life after death?

Old Testament: Job 14.14–17

To read the Bible in a year, read Job 13–15 on June 28, In the year of our Lord 2021

By Don Ruhl

Poor Job wanted to die. Who can blame him? After all his losses, he saw no hope for his life. He then wondered whether there is life after death:

“If a man dies, shall he live again?
All the days of my hard service I will wait,
Till my change comes.
You shall call, and I will answer You;
You shall desire the work of Your hands.
For now You number my steps,
But do not watch over my sin.
My transgression is sealed up in a bag,
And You cover my iniquity.”

– Job 14.14–17

Job knew that God created us, and for Job’s life to end the way that it appeared to him that it was going to end, did not make sense. Therefore, he knew that there had to be more. He anticipated that after death, God must raise us from the dead.

Questions:

  • Does life after death make sense to you in the sense that there has to be more to our existence?
  • Do you so live anticipating the resurrection?
