Why do you ask God to bless you?

Old Testament: Psa 67.1–2

To read the Bible in a year, read Psalms 65–67 on August 1, In the year of our Lord Christ 2021

By Don Ruhl

Do you ask God to bless you for selfish reasons, or do you have something greater in mind? Are your requests for blessings self-focused or God- and others-focused? Psalm 67 begins by showing the focus of the psalmist:

God be merciful to us and bless us,
And cause His face to shine upon us,
That Your way may be known on earth,
Your salvation among all nations.

– Psalm 67.1–2

See how the psalmist thought? God please bless us, causing your face to shine upon us that you might show the earth your way.

The psalmist did not merely think of himself, but of what the rest of humanity needed to know. It was evangelistic in nature.
