A Leopard-Bear-Lion-Like Beast

New Testament: Rev 13.1–2

To read the Bible in a year, read Revelation 13 on December 22, In the year of our Lord Christ 2021

By Don Ruhl

Daniel saw in his visions (Daniel 7), a lion that represented Babylon, a bear that represented the Medes and the Persians, and a leopard that represented Greece.

However, when he saw a fourth beast, he did not picture it as a single animal, but he showed some of the details and then said, “It was different from all the beasts that were before it” (7.7). That beast was Rome.

The Lord Jesus showed John the same beast to represent the same empire. John said this beast came from the sea, in truth coming from the multitudes of peoples in that area, which would include the leftovers of Babylon, the Medes and the Persians, and Greece, combining them all into one horrific beast. John said:

Then I stood on the sand of the sea. And I saw a beast rising up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and on his horns ten crowns, and on his heads a blasphemous name. Now the beast which I saw was like a leopard, his feet were like the feet of a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of a lion. The dragon gave him his power, his throne, and great authority.

– Revelation 13.1–2

Picture a lion, a bear, and a leopard all combined into one vicious beast. That was Rome. That was the empire during which the church was born and it prospered over that dreadful and seemingly unbeatable beast.

Are you a member of Christ’s Church? If so, you are on the winning side, regardless of the ferocity of beast that Satan throws our way.

  • What do you know of the Roman Empire?
  • How was the church able to outlast the persecution of Rome?
