John the Baptist preached with power, declaring what his generation, and ours by extension, needed to hear. Speaking of his hearers as trees, he preached: 

“And even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”

– Matthew 3.10 

People actually liked hearing such preaching, and our generation would go for it also, but so much of preaching is mixed with psychology and other things that soften the message.
