To the Jew First

New Testament: Matt 15.24–27

To read the Bible in a year, read Matthew 15.21–39 on January 22, In the year of our Lord Christ 2022

By Don Ruhl

Paul said to the Romans:

For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.

– Romans 1.16

This explains a conversation Jesus had with a non-Jewish woman who wanted him to heal her daughter:

But He answered and said, “I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” Then she came and worshiped Him, saying, ‘’Lord, help me!” But He answered and said, “It is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the little dogs.” And she said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.”

– Matthew 15.24–27

Rather than being offended, with her humble wisdom she persuaded the Lord to help her.

Questions:

  • When you need something, do you use gentle humility, or do you demand that something be done?
  • How do you want others to ask for help from you?
