Paying taxes

New Testament: Matt 17.25

To read the Bible in a year, read Matthew 17 on January 24, In the year of our Lord Christ 2022

By Don Ruhl

Few want to pay taxes, but everyone wants to benefit from the government. Those who pay taxes want to know that others are paying their part. So some tax-collectors approached Peter and asked him if his teacher was paying the tax. He said, Yes. Then Jesus talked to Peter:

And when he had come into the house, Jesus anticipated him, saying, “What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth take customs or taxes, from their sons or from strangers?”

– Matthew 17.25

The sons of the kingdom really do not need to pay taxes but Jesus went on to teach that we should that we might not cause an unnecessary offense, for we are here to turn people to the kingdom of God.

Questions:

  • In what ways do you benefit from the government?
  • What do you think of people on welfare?
  • Are you seeking to be on welfare if you do not pay taxes?
