The Pharisees tried everything they could think of to trip up Jesus, including a question on divorce: 

The Pharisees also came to Him, testing Him, and saying to Him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for just any reason?”

– Matthew 19.3 

They did not realize that Jesus created marriage. Therefore, he would not wish for it to dissolve for any reason. He intends that one man and one woman marry for life. He gave one exception, but that is it.
