New Testament: Matt 19.18–19
To read the Bible in a year, read Matthew 19.16–30 on January 28, In the year of our Lord Christ 2022
By Don Ruhl
A young man went to Jesus, asking what good thing he could do that would lead to eternal life. Jesus told him to keep the commandments. The discussion continued like this:
He said to Him, “Which ones?” Jesus said, “You shall not murder,” “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not bear false witness,” “Honor your father and your mother,” and, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
– Matthew 19.18–19
Do what God says to do and do not do what he says not to do. That still holds true for us. Yes, we have to follow Jesus, but following him means to obey him. Obey him and you shall have eternal life.
Questions:
- What does it mean to love your neighbor as yourself?
- Why did the young man ask, “Which ones?”
- Are not all the Lord’s commandments necessary?
