Why do we eat and drink?

New Testament: Luke 5.33

To read the Bible in a year, read Luke 5.17–39 on March 27, In the year of our Lord Christ 2022

By Don Ruhl

There was a common religious practice in the first century that the disciples of Jesus did not practice:

Then they said to Him, “Why do the disciples of John fast often and make prayers, and likewise those of the Pharisees, but Yours eat and drink?”

– Luke 5.33

Why do we eat and drink all the time? Or perhaps the better question would be the question that these people were actually asking: Why do we not fast?

It is possible that some people around us actually do fast, and if they are observing the teachings of Jesus on fasting, then we will not know when people are doing it.

However, what about as a group? We get together to eat and to drink, but how often do a group of Christians get together to fast?

Questions:

  • Have you ever fasted?
  • If so, what was it like?
