Old Testament: Jdg 4.7
To read the Bible in a year, read Judges 3–5 on March 31, In the year of our Lord Christ 2022
By Don Ruhl
Israel did evil and for that the Lord gave them to Jabin king of Canaan. Later, it was time to deliver Israel from Jabin. Therefore, the Lord used Deborah to commission Barak to lead an army against Jabin and his army.
The Lord told Barak where to deploy his troops and how many troops to recruit from two of the tribes of Israel. The Lord also said:
“…and against you I will deploy Sisera, the commander of Jabin’s army, with his chariots and his multitude at the River Kishon; and I will deliver him into your hand.”
– Judges 4.7
Israel had sinned. They turned back to him. He delivered them through a judge or, in this case, Barak, who worked with the judge at the time.
However, to eliminate the problem of the enemy who dominated Israel, the nation would have to face that enemy in battle. They would defeat the enemy and they would have their independence again, but there had to be that confrontation and the battle, before they could enjoy their freedom.
We want freedom, but sometimes that requires facing a powerful enemy first.
Questions:
- Can you find the River Kishon on a map?
- How many other female judges did Israel have?
