John the Baptist made such an impression upon the Jews that they sent representatives to ask him a question: 

Now this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”

– John 1.19 

That was a good question. They needed to know who he was that they might know who would come after him, and that John should not be the object of their belief, but the one coming after him. 

Questions: 

• Who was John? 
• Who came after him?
