How many times have waters parted for God’s people?

Old Testament: 2Ki 2.12–14

To read the Bible in a year, read Second Kings 1–3 on May 11, In the year of our Lord Christ 2022

By Don Ruhl

How many times have waters parted for God’s people? I am going to say four. When Moses and Israel crossed the Red Sea. When Joshua and Israel crossed the Jordan River. When Elijah and Elisha crossed the Jordan River. And this time:

And Elisha saw it, and he cried out, “My father, my father, the chariot of Israel and its horsemen!” So he saw him no more. And he took hold of his own clothes and tore them into two pieces. He also took up the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him, and went back and stood by the bank of the Jordan. Then he took the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him, and struck the water, and said, “Where is the LORD God of Elijah?” And when he also had struck the water, it was divided this way and that; and Elisha crossed over.

– 2 Kings 2.12–14

When God’s people are on the march, doing what He wants them to do, nothing can stand in their way.

Therefore, do not live in fear but in full faith, knowing that the Lord will make a way for you.

Questions:

  • Why did Elisha ask, “Where is the Lord God of Elijah?”
  • How do you picture Elisha striking the Jordan? Like snapping a wet towel? Or how?
