When you cannot fly away from an enemy

Old Testament: Psa 55.9–11

To read the Bible in a year, read Psalms 53–55 on July 28, In the year of our Lord Christ 2022

By Don Ruhl

David often had people who were after him, which is what happens when you are a public and godly person. He said that he wished he could have wings like a dove and fly away (Psalm 55.6), but since that was not possible, he made this request of the Lord:

Destroy, O Lord, and divide their tongues,
For I have seen violence and strife in the city.
Day and night they go around it on its walls;
Iniquity and trouble are also in the midst of it.
Destruction is in its midst;
Oppression and deceit do not depart from its streets.

– Psalm 55.9–11

The enemies of the godly will sooner or late show their violent side, and David saw it. Therefore, he requested of the Lord that he would divide the tongues, the efforts, of the enemy, for divided they would fall.

Questions:

  • Do you pray about the violence that is increasing in the land?
  • What else can you do to stop the violence of the enemy?
