David loved God, but that did not keep enemies from rising against him, and it may have even brought on enemies. Once when King Saul chased him, he wrote a psalm to the Lord, speaking of how bad the situation was, and what he wanted the Lord to do: 

My soul is among lions;
I lie among the sons of men
Who are set on fire,
Whose teeth are spears and arrows,
And their tongue a sharp sword.
Be exalted, O God, above the heavens;
Let Your glory be above all the earth.
They have prepared a net for my steps;
My soul is bowed down;
They have dug a pit before me;
Into the midst of it they themselves have fallen.

– Psalm 57.4–6 

He felt their desire to kill him, but David’s response was to see God exalted! That might seem odd to us, but not to David, because everything about his life was about God, and if God was exalted in his life, he knew that God would take care of the enemy. 

Sure enough, while David’s soul was bowed down, he could see already the end of his enemies.
