Old Testament: Psa 119.25–32

Jesus quoted from the Book of Deuteronomy once when the devil was tempting him, saying that man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes out of the mouth of God. I think the psalmist of Psalm 119 lived by that idea, for he once said: 

My soul clings to the dust;
Revive me according to Your word.

– Psalm 119.25

Even as the body can cling to the dust during times of extreme thirst, so the soul can cling to the dust when it is thirsty, and the psalmist knew that the word of God would revive him! It is not surprising, therefore, to read his words that follow in Psalm 119: 

I have declared my ways, and You answered me;
Teach me Your statutes.

Make me understand the way of Your precepts;
So shall I meditate on Your wonderful works.

My soul melts from heaviness;
Strengthen me according to Your word.

Remove from me the way of lying,
And grant me Your law graciously.

I have chosen the way of truth;
Your judgments I have laid before me.

I cling to Your testimonies;
O LORD, do not put me to shame!

I will run the course of Your commandments,
For You shall enlarge my heart.

– Psalm 119.26–32 

When you love the word of God and when you see it as your daily sustenance, you desire it eagerly, and you are famished if you cannot have it. Friends, living by the word of God is the only way to live.
