Keep yourself in the love of God

New Testament: Jude 20–21

To read the Bible in a year, read Jude on December 9, In the year of our Lord Christ 2022

By Don Ruhl

Jude had just shown the horrible nature of false teachers, but then he ended his letter with words of exhortation:

But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.

– Jude 20–21

Instead of following the false teachers who had invaded the church, Jude urged his readers to build themselves up.

They could build themselves up by these four things:

  1. Using their most holy faith
  2. Praying in the Holy Spirit
  3. Keeping themselves in the love of God
  4. Looking for the mercy of the Lord

There are many people who teach that there is nothing you can do to keep yourself in the love of God, but you saw what Jude said.

If we give no effort to our own building up, then it will not happen. The Lord is certainly ready to help us, but he wants us to do what we are capable of doing.

Questions:

  • Are you doing those four things?
  • Are you stronger in your spirit than you were ten years ago?
