Why be astonished?

New Testament: Luke 5.9–10a

To read the Bible in a year, read Luke 5.1–16 on March 26, In the year of our Lord Christ 2023

By Don Ruhl

The Lord told Peter where to cast the net to catch some fish, but Peter had fished the previous night and had come up empty. Therefore, he did not believe the Lord knew what He was talking about. When Peter reluctantly did what the Lord told him to do, Peter and his fishing partners caught more fish, I am guessing, than they ever had before. Then Peter realized how he had doubted Jesus. Luke explained:

For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish which they had taken; and so also were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon.

– Luke 5.9–10

It was not just that they had caught a few fish, but so many that their net was breaking and the boat was sinking.

Questions:

  • Do you think the Lord knows what He is talking about?
  • Do you follow the Lord’s word even if you cannot see any good coming from it?
