When the people of Ammon sought to go to war against Israel, they sought the leadership of Jephthah. He did a wise thing at the beginning:
Now Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the people of Ammon, saying, “What do you have against me, that you have come to fight against me in my land?”
– Judges 11.12
Israel had not done anything to provoke the nation of Ammon. Therefore, Jephthah wanted to know simply what Ammon had against Israel that they wanted to go to war.
The king of Ammon came back with a totally invalid claim on some of Israel’s land. Jephthah showed why they did not have a valid claim to the portion of land that they sought, but the king would not listen.
Therefore, war broke out and Ammon suffered defeat.
Sometimes people do not even know why they oppose you, nevertheless, find out what their reasons are, and go from there.
Questions:
- Where was ancient Ammon?
- Who or what was Jephthah’s mother?
