Mary and the Holy Spirit

New Testament: Matt 1.18

To read the Bible in a year, read Matthew 1 on January 1, In the year of our Lord Christ 2024

By Don Ruhl

He who created all things and spoke light into existence, could also cause a woman to conceive a child without a man involved: “Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 1.18).

See the timing of God. He sent the Holy Spirit to Mary after she had been betrothed to Joseph, but before the two of them came together. Therefore, she would not have a child out of wedlock, but since they had not come together, it would be obvious that the child was not Joseph’s.

See the power of God. He knows all about the birth process, and he who dwells in heaven also knows the smallest details of the human body. How did he cause Mary to conceive without seed from a man? The God who created man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, can certainly cause a conception without a man.

Questions:

  • Do you understand the God we serve?
  • Does a virgin birth seem implausible to you?
  • If so, why?
