The witness of the Spirit

New Testament: Rom 8.16

To read the Bible in a year, read Romans 8.1–18 on August 7, In the year of our Lord Christ 2024

By Don Ruhl

How do we know that we are children of God? Scripture reveals several ways, and here is one of them: “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God…” (Romans 8.16).

Notice that the Scripture does not say the Spirit bears witness to our spirit, but with or along with our spirit.

We have the Spirit within and Paul had just said in verse 15, that the Spirit cries, “Abba, Father.” He makes that cry from our vantage point, affirming along with our spirit, that we are children of God, because we both cry out, “Abba, Father.” (See Galatians 4.6 also.)

Questions:

  • Are you a child of God?
  • Does your manner of living show that you are a child of God?
