Babylon did not become the super power of the Earth because it was barren, but it was a beautiful place that rose to prominence over all the nations. 

However, just like other nations, it also fell because of its idolatry: “Declare among the nations, proclaim, and set up a standard; proclaim—do not conceal it—say, ‘Babylon is taken…her idols are humiliated, her images are broken in pieces.’ For out of the north a nation comes up against her, which shall make her land desolate, and no one shall dwell therein. They shall move, they shall depart, both man and beast” (Jeremiah 50.2-3). 

Babylon exalted itself and the Lord humbled it. It does not matter how exalted a people may become, if they sin, they will come down.
