Simon had used sorcery to make the people of Samaria believe that he had the power of God, but then Simon learned the truth from Philip and became a follower of Jesus Christ. Later, the church in Jerusalem sent a couple of apostles to Samaria that the new church there might have the miraculous ability of the Holy Spirit,

And when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money, saying, “Give me this power also, that anyone on whom I lay hands may receive the Holy Spirit” (Acts 8.18–19).

This is the original simony, seeking to purchase a position in the church. Simon had no idea what he did, because the Lord and His gifts are not for sale. He does not need the money. He owns the world and the heavens! All the wealth of the world is as dust to Him. Yes, there is a place for our money in the church, but not to buy the gifts of God.
