The priests ate holy food

Exodus Bible Background

To read the Bible in a year, read Exodus 29–30 on February 2, In the year of our Lord 2016

When the priests made sacrifices of animals, the priests had to eat the animal, and the bread,

“And you shall take the ram of the consecration and boil its flesh in the holy place. Then Aaron and his sons shall eat the flesh of the ram, and the bread that is in the basket, by the door of the tabernacle of meeting. They shall eat those things with which the atonement was made, to consecrate and to sanctify them; but an outsider shall not eat them, because they are holy. And if any of the flesh of the consecration offerings, or of the bread, remains until the morning, then you shall burn the remainder with fire. It shall not be eaten, because it is holy” (Exodus 29.31–34).

This was no potluck. Nor did they eat out of hunger, but they ate these things as part of their job as priests when they made the regular offerings that the Lord wanted, and when Israelites came with special offerings.

In this way, the Lord did provide for His priests, but no one else could eat the food, and they did not keep leftovers, but had to burn what they did not eat that day.

Likewise, let us see what we do in the church when she assembles to worship as holy. Let us not defile it with unholy things or unholy thinking, but let us purify ourselves that we may offer pure worship.
