Israel did something against the Lord. Then David sought to discover his numerical strength rather than relying upon faith in the Lord. For these things, the Lord punished Israel,

So the LORD sent a plague upon Israel, and seventy thousand men of Israel fell. And God sent an angel to Jerusalem to destroy it. As he was destroying, the LORD looked and relented of the disaster, and said to the angel who was destroying, “It is enough; now restrain your hand.” And the angel of the LORD stood by the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite (1 Chronicles 21.14–15).

After 70,000 died throughout Israel, the angel set his sights upon Jerusalem, but once he started destroying it, the Lord stopped the angel. Then the angel stood on property owned by Ornan, where the temple of the Lord would eventually go up.
