09.06.2016 – Old Testament: Pro 9.13–18
To read the Bible in a year, read Proverbs 9–10 on September 6, In the year of our Lord 2016
By Don Ruhl
The Lady Wisdom calls out to those who lack understanding, promising that if they turn to her, she will make them wise. She encourages all to eat her bread and to drink her wine (Notice Proverbs 9.1–6). Then the Holy Spirit-inspired Solomon declared this of The Lady Folly,
A foolish woman is clamorous;
She is simple, and knows nothing.
For she sits at the door of her house,
On a seat by the highest places of the city,
To call to those who pass by,
Who go straight on their way:
“Whoever is simple, let him turn in here”;
And as for him who lacks understanding, she says to him,
“Stolen water is sweet,
And bread eaten in secret is pleasant.”
But he does not know that the dead are there,
That her guests are in the depths of hell.
She places herself at the same place as The Lady Wisdom and does the same things, but when she invites you to eat with her, The Lady Folly does not offer her own bread, but that which she has stolen.
Therefore, if you cannot initially distinguish between wisdom and foolishness, just keep listening and eventually both will reveal themselves.
- Do you have trouble deciding what is wisdom and what is folly?
- Have you tried waiting to see the fruit that comes from each one?
