12.13.2016 – Old Testament: Joel 2.6–9
To read the Bible in a year, read Joel on December 13, In the year of our Lord 2016
By Don Ruhl
Israel sinned without ceasing. Therefore, the only way to get the nation to quit sinning was to do something drastic. The Book of Joel reveals the drastic measures the Lord took against His own people, sending an army against them, and look at what this meant for Israel,
Before them the people writhe in pain;
All faces are drained of color.
They run like mighty men,
They climb the wall like men of war;
Every one marches in formation,
And they do not break ranks.
They do not push one another;
Every one marches in his own column.
Though they lunge between the weapons,
They are not cut down.
They run to and fro in the city,
They run on the wall;
They climb into the houses,
They enter at the windows like a thief.
Those first two lines say it all. Seeing the approaching mega-powerful army would cause people to writhe in pain, just anticipating what headed their way, and you could see the fear in their faces, because all the color had drained out.
Then Joel pictured the ferocity of the army about to attack Israel, as the enemy marched forward perfectly, showing their discipline and fearlessness, and then they would enter the city and have free reign.
- What do you fear?
- Do you believe fearing God first can help you overcome your fears?
