A star falls from Heaven to Earth

Revelation Bible Background

12.18.2016 – New Testament: Rev 9.1–3

To read the Bible in a year, read Revelation 9 on December 18, In the year of our Lord 2016

By Don Ruhl

When the fifth angel sounded his trumpet, it unleashed frightening things, what Revelation 9.12 refers to as a woe. Look at the beginning of the woe,

Then the fifth angel sounded: And I saw a star fallen from heaven to the earth. To him was given the key to the bottomless pit. And he opened the bottomless pit, and smoke arose out of the pit like the smoke of a great furnace. So the sun and the air were darkened because of the smoke of the pit. Then out of the smoke locusts came upon the earth. And to them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power (Revelation 9.1–3).

A bottomless pit, smoke from a great furnace, locusts with the power of scorpions all create an image of ferocious power. However, Jesus gave us the Book of Revelation to let us know that regardless of the powers aligned against us, He stays with us, even to the end. Therefore, do not fear, but fix your eyes on the Lord Jesus Christ.

  • What frightening things have you faced in life?
  • How did you survive them?
