King Saul wanted to obey God partially, modifying God’s commands as the king saw fit. Then when God would not respond to Saul anymore, he sought to speak with Samuel, although he had died. The king sought a medium who made contact with Samuel to find out what would happen in the upcoming battle,

And the king said to her, “Do not be afraid. What did you see?” And the woman said to Saul, “I saw a spirit ascending out of the earth.” So he said to her, “What is his form?” And she said, “An old man is coming up, and he is covered with a mantle.” And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he stooped with his face to the ground and bowed down (1 Samuel 28.13–14).

Saul even bowed before Samuel, something that Saul did not do with his heart toward God. Yet, what Saul did happens often, that is people dishonor God but honor a man or a woman. Why?

Questions:

  • Have you rejected God in the past, but sought the advice of a man?
  • What brought you back to God?
