Do not boast if the Lord uses you

To read the Bible in a year, read Isaiah 10–16 on September 27, In the year of our Lord 2017

By Don Ruhl

God used Assyria and its king against Israel like a man uses an ax. Have you seen an ax boast of itself against the man using it? No, but Assyria boasted of itself and what it had done to Israel (Isaiah 10.15), and the Lord said this back to the Assyrian king,

Therefore the Lord, the Lord of hosts,
Will send leanness among his fat ones;
And under his glory
He will kindle a burning
Like the burning of a fire.
So the Light of Israel will be for a fire,
And his Holy One for a flame;
It will burn and devour
His thorns and his briers in one day.
And it will consume the glory of his forest and of his fruitful field,
Both soul and body;
And they will be as when a sick man wastes away.
Then the rest of the trees of his forest
Will be so few in number
That a child may write them.
(Isaiah 10.16–19)

The Lord would use Israel against Assyria, and where is Assyria today? The nation has vanished.

If the Lord uses us, and perhaps He has used all of us at one time, we should be humble before Him and not think ourselves great, because He is the Mighty One.

Questions:

  • Do you humble yourself before God?
  • Do you humble yourself before man?
