The Servant of God

Isaiah Bible Background

10.12.2017 – Old Testament: Isa 49.1–2

To read the Bible in a year, read Isaiah 48–49 on October 12, In the year of our Lord 2017

By Don Ruhl

Isaiah 49 starts with the Messiah speaking through the prophet, recording the Messiah as speaking to people other than Israel,

“Listen, O coastlands, to Me,
And take heed, you peoples from afar!
The LORD has called Me from the womb;
From the matrix of My mother He has made mention of My name.
And He has made My mouth like a sharp sword;
In the shadow of His hand He has hidden Me,
And made Me a polished shaft;
In His quiver He has hidden Me.”
(Isaiah 49.1–2)

The Messiah spoke of Himself as called by Yahweh God while still in the womb, with a sharp sword for a mouth, that He was hidden in the hand of God, and that He was an arrow in God’s quiver. Therefore, let all the coastlands and all the nations of the earth hear what the Messiah says to each one of us.

  • Do you hear what the Messiah (The Christ), says?
  • Are you a servant of God?
