Matthew Bible Background

01.26.2018 – New Testament: Matt 18.21

To read the Bible in a year, read Matthew 18.21–35 on January 26, In the year of our Lord 2018

By Don Ruhl

Jesus taught how to deal with a brother who sins against you, but refuses to repent of his sin. That must have prompted in the mind of Peter, what to do if your brother does repent. He presented this question to Jesus,

Then Peter came to Him and said, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?” (Matthew 18.21).

How many times will my brother sin against me and just how generous do I need to be with my forgiveness? Personally, I think Peter was being generous because I look at myself and question whether I would willingly forgive my brother that many times. However, keep reading and discover just how generous Jesus taught Peter that he needed to be.

Questions:

  • Could you forgive your brother seven times?
  • Could you forgive him endlessly?
