Pharaoh and the Egyptians learned of Israel’s God the hard way

Exodus Bible Background

01.27.2018 – Old Testament: Exo 14.4

To read the Bible in a year, read Exodus 13–15 on January 27, In the year of our Lord 2018

By Don Ruhl

Finally, Pharaoh let Israel go, but later he regretted it and pursued Israel to bring them back that they might continue to serve the Egyptians, but in so doing they would learn something,

“Then I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, so that he will pursue them; and I will gain honor over Pharaoh and over all his army, that the Egyptians may know that I am the LORD.” And they did so (Exodus 14.4).

Pharaoh kept fighting against Yahweh God, but in so doing the Egyptian king only brought on the stronger forces of the God of Heaven, showing that He easily rules over Pharaoh.

In this passage, even after experiencing the 10 plagues, he would take his army and pursue Israel, but eventually Pharaoh and his army would die in the Red Sea, showing that Israel’s God was the one and only true and living God.

  • Do you fight against God?
  • Do you willingly submit to Him?
  • Or do you find yourself somewhere in the middle?
