The Pharisees liked using the Roman government’s money, but they did not want to have to pay for it. Therefore, they thought they would see what Jesus would say about the matter, asking Him whether it was lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not.

“Show Me the tax money.” So they brought Him a denarius. And He said to them, “Whose image and inscription is this?” They said to Him, “Caesar’s.” And He said to them, “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s” (Matthew 22.19–21).

Many people are like that today. They do not want to pay taxes, but they want to have money and they want to use it as they wish. They also want to use the roads, have the military defend them, and enjoy many other benefits of the government, and then turn around and curse those who sponge off the government!
