More than the carpenter’s son

Luke Bible Background

03.24.2018 – New Testament: Luke 4.22

To read the Bible in a year, read Luke 4.1–32 on March 24, In the year of our Lord 2018

By Don Ruhl

Jesus said amazing things. When people heard Him speak or even when they heard Him read Scripture, He so spoke that He sounded as though He was the Author, and it made them question whether he was merely the son of Joseph or not,

So all bore witness to Him, and marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth. And they said, “Is this not Joseph’s son?” (Luke 4.22).

Jesus had just read a prophecy from the Book of Isaiah. However, He must have read it in such a way that He let the people know that the prophecy referred to Him. After His reading, He also said that the Scripture had been fulfilled right there in their presence. That made Him much more than the son of Joseph.

  • What would you think if prophecy was fulfilled right before your eyes?
  • Do you think you would have believed Jesus if you had lived back then?
