How Job wanted to appear before God

Job Bible Background

07.05.2018 – Old Testament: Job 31.35–37

To read the Bible in a year, read Job 31–32 on July 5, In the year of our Lord 2018

By Don Ruhl

We certainly understand that Job said things that he should not have said, but we take into consideration his great suffering. Then again, he said other things for which there can be no rationalizing, such as this:

“Oh, that I had one to hear me!
Here is my mark.
Oh, that the Almighty would answer me,
That my Prosecutor had written a book!
Surely I would carry it on my shoulder,
And bind it on me like a crown;
I would declare to Him the number of my steps;
Like a prince I would approach Him.”
(Job 31.35–37)

Job feared God, but the more he thought about how he lived righteously and the suffering that he received for it, the more he became arrogant in his attitude toward God. He changed his attitude quickly when he finally saw God and spoke with Him.

Questions:

  • How do you wish to approach God?
  • What will you say to God when you do meet Him?
